4 Tips to Stay Healthy as You Age | AFC Urgent Care Memphis

The team at AFC Urgent Care Memphis is ready to help celebrate “Healthy Aging Month” this September! Our first bit of celebration? Sharing tips with your family about ways to stay at your healthiest, even as your age increases.

Age Is Just a Number

Remember, just because you become older with each passing birthday doesn’t mean your health has to decline. The following steps can help you stay at your healthiest at every age.

First and foremost, you’re going to want to get moving. Regular exercise is vital to help maintain a healthy body and brain. Guidelines indicate that most adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of intense exercise. If you can work out three to five days a week for 30 minutes at a time, you’re doing good.

Don’t think you have to go for a vigorous run for 30 minutes or even complete the 30 minutes all at once. If it’s hard to find a 30-minute segment to exercise during the day, then split it up into two 15-minute intervals or three 10-minute intervals. You just want to make sure you’re getting those 30 minutes.

Also, think outside the box. You don’t have to spend those 30 minutes running as hard as you can around a track. With the weather still being nice, swim a few laps in the pool. Or try taking a spin class or a nice bike ride. Exercise can be fun, you know? Yoga and tai chi are also great classes to try, especially as you get older, because they can help improve balance and prevent falls.

When in the kitchen, add some spices to your food. As we age, our sense of taste can dull some, due to health conditions and the medications we take for them. But by adding herbs and spices to the meal, you can get more flavor with every bite!

And, of course, you can’t maintain your health without getting quality sleep each night. If you believe a medical condition is keeping you up at night or your medications are causing insomnia, talk with your physician to see what can be done so your sleep—and your health—doesn’t suffer.
