Beat the Heat This Summer | AFC Urgent Care Memphis

The team at AFC Urgent Care Memphis knows how excited you are about being able to spend more time outside this summer. But it’s also important that you take proper precautions to stay safe in the summer heat.

Avoid the Dangers of the Sun

The following are ways to help keep cool this summer, especially during the really hot summer days.

First and foremost, drink water. Be sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day to remain hydrated. The amount of water you need each day varies from person to person. The best way to tell if you’re drinking enough is to take a look at the color of your urine. If you’re well-hydrated, your urine will be pale yellow or clear. If it’s darker, it’s time to drink more water.

Second, bring the fans with you! Portable fans now allow you to bring the cool air outdoors. Whether you’re watching your child’s sporting event, participating in the local holiday parades over the summer or just having an outdoor barbecue with friends, bring some fans with you to help add an extra element of “cool” to your day.

When outside, also make sure you are dressed appropriately. Choose light, breezy layers of clothing to allow your body to breathe in the heat. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin. You’ll need to reapply sunscreen every two hours while out in the sun—more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

Finally, if you do get too hot during the day, know how you can help your body to quickly cool down. For example, by applying an ice pack on your wrist or neck, you are able to help your body cool down more quickly and help avoid overheating and heat exhaustion from the sun.

If you begin to feel dizzy, disoriented or nauseated after being out in the sun for awhile, seek medical attention. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Memphis can help ensure you are properly hydrated and not suffering from heat exhaustion.
