Don't Let the Summer Bugs Bite! | AFC Urgent Care Memphis
Do you really want your summer filled with bug bites? Probably not. But mosquitoes, ticks and chiggers are all a fact of life in west Tennessee this time of year.
That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Memphis is here to offer you some tips on how to enjoy the summer insect-free!
Why Do Bugs Bite?
Why can’t we all just get along? Unfortunately, the summer season is one in which we need to protect ourselves against bug bites. But have you ever wondered why bugs bite us in the first place?
That depends on the bug. Bugs like mosquitoes and ticks bite us because they need our blood to live. However, when it comes to bugs like bees and spiders, they sting or bite us because they feel like they are in danger.
And chiggers don’t actually bite at all, they cling to your skin.
How Can We Protect Ourselves From Bug Bites?
As with anything, prevention is the best treatment for bug bites. There are steps you can take to lower your risk of bug bites this summer and anytime of year.
The following are ways you can prevent bug bites:
- Keep mosquitos and other bugs where they belong—outside—by using screens in doors and windows.
- Make sure to pour out any standing water near your home.
- Apply insect repellent that includes DEET when heading outdoors.
- Be sure to wear light-colored clothing.
What Do You Do If You Suffer a Bug Bite?
Unfortunately, sometimes bug bites happen. If you experience a bite, make sure to take action as soon as possible so that you are not left with itching, scratching and other bothersome symptoms of bug bites.
Try applying an OTC anti-itch cream or hydrocortisone, putting an ice pack on the bite and/or taking an OTC antihistamine. If you’re exposed to chiggers, take a shower and scrub your body to remove the chiggers. It’s also in your best interest not to scratch a bite, though we know that can seem pretty close to impossible!
