Stop Feeding Your Cold!

We’ve all begged for the temperatures to change. However, while we’re excited about the crisp, autumn air, the cooler temperatures have also brought the fever, chills and sniffles to some of us already. And while it’s important to drink fluids and feed your body, you want to make sure you’re feeding your immune system and not your cold.

Eat Right, Drink Better

You hear it all the time when you’re sick, *“Be sure you are drinking enough fluids and eating well.” And while you think you’re doing just that when it comes to your cold, what you may actually be doing is making it worse. Therefore, make a note of these foods that you shouldn’t eat the next time you get sick (which hopefully will be a LONG time from now).

When some people become sick, they tend to go for juices, sodas like ginger ale and sports drinks. However, the regular versions of these beverages are loaded with sugar, which actually helps to weaken your body’s ability to fight the infection going on within your system. Therefore, stick to water as best you can. If water isn’t for you, then try ginger tea or sugar-free coconut water to stay hydrated. Or choose lower-sugar versions of your favorite drinks.

As far as foods go, when sick, we usually go for soup, toast and crackers. But believe it or not, you’re actually not doing yourself any favors by eating the refined carbs that are in your toast and crackers. Actually, when consuming those foods, you are once again eating sugar that, like the beverages mentioned above, is preventing your body from fighting the infection. Therefore, try to stick to soup only and skip the toast and crackers, or select whole-grain versions of them.
