What Is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection, or Candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Candida normally lives inside moist places of the body, such as the mouth, throat, stomach and vagina.
It typically doesn’t cause any problems, but sometimes Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment changes in a way that encourages its growth. Yeast infections most often occur in the vagina. We’ve listed the common symptoms of a yeast infection below.
Yeast Infection Symptoms
- Itching, burning or irritation of the vagina or vulva
- Pain or soreness in the vagina
- Vaginal burning with intercourse or urination
- A thick, white, odorless discharge that resembles cottage cheese, or a watery discharge
- Rash
When Will a Yeast Infection Go Away?
If a yeast infection is mild, it will usually clear up after a few days. More severe yeast infections, however, can last for up to two weeks.
The best treatment for a yeast infection is typically with anti-fungal medicine. Other adequate treatments include OTC medicated creams or suppositories for yeast infections, like Monistat and other brands. Obviously, no one wants to experience a yeast infection, and we’ve listed some effective ways to prevent these from happening below.
Ways to Prevent a Yeast Infection
- Avoid using scented tampons and pads, vaginal deodorants and perfumed feminine hygiene products.
- Avoid douching. Douching washes away the good, healthy bacteria in the vagina, and throws off the vagina’s natural balance.
- Wear breathable underwear. Cotton is your best choice, as it doesn’t hold onto heat or moisture and will keep the genital area dry.
- Use antibiotics only when you have to. You don’t need them for conditions like a cold, because they don’t do anything against a virus. If you don’t have to, don’t take them.
- Manage diabetes. If you have it, be sure to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels and keep them under control.
