What You Can Do to Prevent Falls | AFC Urgent Care Memphis

According to the World Health Organization, more than 646,000 fatal falls occur every year. And falls are particularly common among older adults and others who have difficulty walking.

But while falls are common, most of them are preventable.

One of the best ways to help prevent falls from occurring? Staying physically active.

Why It’s Important to Stay Active

We’ve heard it before—exercise can help us live a long and healthy life. But as we age, physical activity plays an increasingly important role, since it can help us maintain mobility and balance.

Certain types of exercise have been shown to help prevent falls, since they promote balance. These exercises, include:

  • Pilates
  • T’ai chi
  • Yoga

Other Ways to Prevent Falls

First, take a look at your home environment. There are many steps you can take there to limit fall risk.

Look around the home and remove any clutter that’s on the floor. In addition to clutter, you also want to look for other potential tripping hazards, such as loose rugs and cords.

Next, make sure that all areas of the home, including the deck or patio, are well-lit. Dimly lit areas can greatly increase the risk of falling.

And finally, if you have someone in your home that has a difficult time getting around, make sure there are handrails on both sides of the stair and in the bathrooms.

You’ll also want to consider your footwear. Depending on the surface of your floors, walking around in socks can be slippery. So choose socks or slippers with non-skid soles or wear shoes around the house for the best traction.
